Ventless tumble dryers: condenser or heat pump?

A “ventless” dryer usually means one that does not require a duct carrying moist air outside. The term alone does not identify its technology or required connections. Distinguish an air-exhaust duct from a water-drain hose, which may be an option on certain models.

Three types worth understanding

A vented dryer needs an appropriate exhaust arrangement according to its installation instructions. A condenser dryer turns moisture into water collected in a tank; some models also support a drain connection. A heat-pump dryer reuses heat in its drying system and also collects moisture as water.

For both condenser and heat-pump models, check ventilation requirements, permitted ambient conditions and water disposal. “No exhaust duct” does not mean the dryer can go in any closed cupboard. The model instructions determine a suitable installation location.

Consumption, duration and programmes

To compare running costs, examine consumption figures for the specified programme and test conditions. There is no single savings percentage for every heat-pump model. Consider frequency of use, purchase price and the duration of programmes suitable for your laundry.

Check whether the dryer’s capacity applies to a particular programme. Delicates and specialist programmes may have different load limits. Verify drying sensors and programmes in the specification rather than assuming all features from the technology name.

Dimensions and routine maintenance

Measure space for opening the door, accessing filters and emptying the tank. To stack a dryer on a washer, confirm compatibility of both models and an approved stacking kit. Similar appliance widths alone do not establish compatibility.

Maintain filters and the heat exchanger according to the manufacturer’s instructions; “self-cleaning” does not necessarily remove every maintenance task. Choose a model whose tank, filters and controls you can use comfortably every day.

Choose the drying technology that suits the installation conditions, then filter by capacity and dimensions. If a category has no models yet, do not infer supplier availability. Store availability and delivery dates require separate confirmation for each product.
